Here at Two Masters, we try a lot of wines. I know, I know, it's hard to feel sorry for us. But while we do discover many that are really nice, we also 'kiss a lot of frogs' so to speak.
So we were quite pleased when we came across a new cabernet that resulted from a partnership between Tyler Florence - a well known restaurateur and 'foodie' - and the Michael Mondavi family. As you know, the Mondavi family is a Napa Valley icon, having produced local wines for over 4 generations.
As in years prior, my wife and I again enjoy watching Tyler on the Food Network as he runs ragged a handful of food truck hopefuls. The show is a hoot if you haven't caught it: The Great Food Truck Race. Fun stuff.
Anyway it's pretty clear this partnership is producing great results. Their 2009 cab has a nice nose and soft entry, shows great fruit, cherry and blackberry on the mid-palate, and a long, satisfying finish with soft tannins. Their tasting notes boast:
"Our 2009 Tyler Florence Cabernet Sauvignon has opulent rich cherry dark berry and cassis Our 2009 Tyler Florence Cabernet Sauvignon has opulent rich cherry, dark berry and cassis character perfectly balanced by supple tannins and hints of toasted vanilla and toffee—a classic expression of this world-famous Cab region. Enjoy with rack of lamb, tender beef fillet or rich, roasted vegetables."
Tyler is an accomplished chef, and now - with the Mondavi's in partnership - an accomplished wine maker. Perhaps best of all is the retail price: This wine is available on their website for only about $25. Very nice!
We hope you enjoy this wine as much as we did.
